Steer Privacy Policy

Last update date: September 11, 2026

Steer is a macOS app for browsing and editing the local instruction files used by Codex and Claude Code. It lets you review changes before saving, preview inherited instructions, and estimate token counts. This policy explains how Steer handles your information.

No tracking

Steer does not include analytics, advertising, or third-party crash reporting tools. There is no account or login. Steer does not upload your instruction files or drafts to us or to AI providers. File discovery, editing, change comparisons, and token estimates run on your Mac. External content in Markdown previews is covered below.

Local files and access

Steer reads instruction files in your user folders, managed system location, and selected project folder. It may also read referenced files outside the project for previews and token estimates. File access follows macOS permissions. Saving edits or creating and removing overrides changes files on your Mac. Codex and Claude Code handle those files under their own settings and privacy policies.

Data stored on your Mac

Steer stores recent project names and paths and your theme preference locally. Saved instructions stay in their file locations. Unsaved drafts and previews are kept only for the current session. Removing Steer may leave preferences and saved files behind; you can delete them separately. Steer does not upload or sync this data, though other backup or sync software may do so.

External content and the clipboard

Markdown previews may load remote images automatically. These requests and links you open may share your IP address, requested URL, and standard request information with external services, whose privacy policies apply. Paths you copy go to the macOS clipboard, where other apps or system features may access or sync them.

Changes to this policy

Any changes to this policy will appear on this page with an updated date.
